Driving Regulations
University Vehicles
All summer program staff must follow the Driving Regulations Pertaining to all University Vehicles:
Who May Drive a University Vehicle
Motor vehicles furnished by the University are to be used exclusively for University business and must be parked on University property (owned or leased) when not in use.
Drivers of a University vehicle must be University faculty, staff or students, at least 18 years of age, and properly licensed in accordance with the laws of the State of Michigan. Student drivers must be authorized by the Dean, Director or Department Head to use a vehicle. Vehicles will not be released to a driver without a valid license. It is the responsibility of the supervisor to check for a valid operator’s license before authorizing staff to use a University vehicle.
Valid operator’s licenses are those issued in the United States, Canada, and international licenses with an endorsement for driving in the U.S.
Driving Records
Supervisors or authorized department representatives are responsible to periodically check the driving record of those who routinely drive a University vehicle. Drivers with seven or more points appearing on their driver’s license will immediately lose their privilege to drive University vehicles. These checks must be performed no less than once per year, and may be conducted through Fleet Services for licenses issued by the State of Michigan.
Citations
The driver of a University vehicle is responsible for any moving or parking violations he or she may incur while operating the vehicle.
Insurance
The Office of Risk Management insures all University vehicles with a $250 deductible. Questions about insurance coverage and claims should be directed to their office at 734.764-2200.
The Vehicle Ownership Identification (Blue Card) is the vehicle’s registration and proof of insurance. The certification is kept in the vehicle glove compartment.
Accidents
In case of an accident or an alleged accident, a Driver’s Report of Vehicle Damage or Public Incident (Accident Report) must be completed and submitted promptly to Transportation Services. This is in addition to any reports filed by the police. Forms may be found in the glove compartment or you can download it here.

To schedule routine maintenance or repairs, contact Garage Operations at 734.764.2490 weekdays from 7:00 AM to 12:00 AM.
