Dispensing Medication
In order to comply with applicable law, Risk Management and General Counsel have determined strict guidelines for dispensing medication to summer program youth participants.
Medication Authorization
Parents or guardians must give authorization to dispense all medication. Information must include:
- The name of the medication.
- The dosage of the medication.
- The name and telephone number of the prescribing physician. The telephone number of the physician must be on record.
Participants Without Medication Authorization
In the event that a participant reports to summer program with prescribed medication but without the proper documentation, follow this procedure:
- Remove the medication from the participant and place it in a secure location.
- Contact the participant’s parent or guardian to obtain proper documentation. A faxed authorization is acceptable.
- If the parent or guardian is unavailable, make every attempt to contact the prescribing physician for instructions regarding immediacy of need, complications or risks associated with not administering medication, etc.
- Refer the participant to a licensed medical facility (hospital or clinic) to dispense the medication if the physician states that the medication is necessary, yet parental consent cannot be obtained.
Costs for medical treatment are the responsibility of the parents or guardians of the participant.
Procedures for Dispensing Medication
- Keep medication in a secure environment, under the control and direction of a designated adult.
- Limit the number of adults authorized to dispense medication to ensure control.
- Administer medication in strict compliance with the prescribing physician’s instructions.
- When medication is given, log the following information in a central location and make it available to medical and Security personnel in the event of an emergency:
- Complete name of medication
- Date and time of each administration, indicating AM or PM
- Signature or initials of the person administering the medication
Consent
Medication cannot be administered by University of Michigan Staff without appropriate parental consent.
